Weekend Starts at Waialae!

The chase is on for the first trophy of the PGA TOUR's season opening event at Waialae Country Club. After 36 holes at the Sony Open in Hawaii, five players share the lead at 9-under par — defending champion Nick Taylor (shown above), Davis Riley, Kevin Roy, and rising talents S.H. Kim and Adrien Dumont de Chassart.

The five-way tie marks the most players atop a PGA TOUR leaderboard through two rounds since the 2024 Valspar Championship.

Two-time TOUR winner Davis Riley, 29, matched the day’s low score with a 6-under 64, matching Ryan Gerard. South Korea’s S.H. Kim, 27, is also seeking a breakthrough. A runner-up at the 2023 Fortinet Championship, Kim hopes to become just the third Korean player to win at the Sony Open, following K.J. Choi (2008) and Si Woo Kim (2023).

Joining him is Adrien Dumont de Chassart, the 25-year-old Belgian standout and recent Korn Ferry Tour graduate. He posted his career-low 36-hole total and a win this weekend would make him the first Belgian champion in Sony Open history.

Reigning champion Nick Taylor remains steady in his 10th Sony Open in Hawaii appearance, continuing an impressive streak of 18 consecutive par-or-better rounds at Waialae. Already a five-time TOUR winner, Taylor is aiming to become the event’s first back-to-back champion since Jimmy Walker in 2015 — and the first player to successfully defend a PGA TOUR title since Scottie Scheffler at the 2025 Memorial Tournament.

Vijay Singh

Another headline story comes from Vijay Singh (shown above), who at 62 years old made the cut at 2-under. It’s his first cut in a non-major since 2020, and his 507th total made cut moves him past Stewart Cink for sixth-most since 1983. The 2005 Sony Open champion becomes the oldest player ever to make the cut at this event.

Saturday’s action will spotlight marquee pairings, including:

• 12:28 p.m. – Sahith Theegala, Aaron Rai (first tee)

• 1:04 p.m. – Hideki Matsuyama, Johnny Keefer (first tee)

• 3:30 p.m. – Jordan Spieth, Brian Harman (first tee)

• 5:15 p.m. – Nick Dunlap, Doug Ghim (first tee)

With five leaders and a host of contenders within striking range, Waialae is set for an electric weekend finish!

Fans Come Out for UH Men's Golf's Anson Cabello

KS Maui alum Anson Cabello had the wind on his back with three birdies on Friday, finishing with a second round 1-over par 71, but with a 36-hole total 8-over, failed to advance to the weekend.

In a press interview after his Friday finish, the UH Men's Golf junior reflected on his PGA TOUR debut, "It was so cool. This week didn't turn out the way I had hoped but the whole experience with my caddie, my teammate, that was big."

Hawaii fans came out to Waialae on Thursday and Friday to cheer on Cabello. "It was amazing. You know, they were out there yesterday (Thursday) when I didn't play very good, and to see them out here today (Friday) just meant the world me."
