2021 Volunteer Chair of the Year Michele Akahane's Fine Finish!

Our 2021 Sony Open in Hawaii Volunteer Chair of the Year Michele Akahane is the "mom" to her volunteers - first responders, firefighters, police officers and nurses, who staff the First Aid trailer during tournament week.

This week Michele received well-deserved appreciation and national recognition from the PGA TOUR.  Friends of Hawaii Charities President Corbett Kalama shared with Michele that she was selected as one (of five) finalists for the 2021 PGA TOUR Volunteer of the Year honor.

Tournaments would not be possible without the support of volunteers, who not only help events operate, but also contribute to the overall charitable impact. With the support of more than 100,000 volunteers annually, the PGA TOUR assists approximately 3,000 charities each year.  Here in the islands, the Sony Open in Hawaii's hundreds of volunteers have enabled Friends of Hawaii Charities, with the support of The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation and our generous sponsors, to gift nearly $22 million to over 350 local charities since 1999.
